I have been working at Portrait Innovations full-time

Decent pay. Non commission so you are pretty stable, and raises are fairly generous when they get around to giving them. The work itself is fun for the bulk of the year, and you get to learn some photography skills that a lot of places gloss over. Depending on where you work, managers and the traveling managers are great employees with a lot of experience.

Upper management does not care about you. At a certain level, you are considered to be quickly replaceable and they have no problems firing an employee that isn't working hard enough (like Steve Jobs, but without the black turtleneck). Your schedule is garbage. You have two days off Monday, and another rotating day. This rotating day will occasionally be both Saturday and Sunday and you'll work longer hours during the week (which is usually totally worth it). If you have a regular engagement any day but Monday (which most stores are closed), cancel it. No they can't guarantee being able to take lunch for it then, even if it's short. No, you can't be promised to get off early. No exceptions. Your schedule will likely change from day to day as well, as appointments book up. The only exception is your last day of the week, in which if you stay even a minute overtime you risk getting into some serious hot water (except, of course, for the holidays, in which you may work 50 to 60 hours a week. It's not a great time, but those ARE some lovely paychecks) Vacations are difficult at best to take, as over a quarter of the year is taken up by "Blackout", in which nobody gets to use time off. This means that the rest of the year you will be climbing over fellow employees to get the days you want. This also means if you live away from your family and can't get to them and back over the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day you have off, tough stuff friend, because we are open on the 26th and you will be needed. Traveling to other studios is listed as an optional component of the job, but if they need you at another studio within 60 miles of your store they can (and will) make you go (to be fair, I love traveling). The worst thing, however, is the sales average. You are expected to maintain an overall dollar amount, measured over both one and four weeks. Most of the time it's fairly reasonable, however if you get a bad run of sales and slip at the wrong time of year, you are out of luck (and a job). Also, if you are considering part time work, you will need to keep every weekend clear but may not work for months on end depending on how busy the studio is. You'll work every weekend (and likely weekdays) around Christmas and Easter, but outside of that it varies from studio to studio. Also, the company itself will never provide a reference for you, and expect you to hold to a VERY strict non-compete agreement. Your only hope for getting a reference when you leave is if a manager or fellow employee does it.

    Advice to Management

Work your part timers. I understand the thoughts behind keeping them off weekends, but that means when you really need them, they are under trained and don't have the self confidence they need to pull their weight.
