I have been working at Public Consulting Group full-time
The title of this review is something I heard when interviewing at PCG several years ago and it's 100% true. There is a lot of room for individuals to make their mark at PCG here as experts on one topic or another, even for some of the most junior employees in the company. The company is good about rewarding new ideas or efforts to expand into other areas. PCG is also good about letting employees develop over a long period of time and even change roles. Over those years PCG has also grown more supportive of employees too with new HR benefits and programs to train internally. A work in progress but promising.
The flipside of "it's what you make of it" is that it is a loosely-led organization and can be hard to know if you are spinning your wheels at times. This is more true in some practice areas than others but in general the entrepreneurial spirit of PCG can cut both ways. Benchmarks for promotion could be clearer and strategic objectives would be helpful for settings goals. Managers within practice areas oversee silos of staff and clients and culture and as a result quality of professional growth can vary widely. Depending on your role, regular travel may be part of your life.
Advice to Management
Stronger management vision and more regular communication can support PCG's growth by generating mission buy-in among operations, consulting, support, technical and other staff.
