Current Employee - Scientist in Cranbury, NJ

I have been working at Purdue Pharma full-time (more than 3 years)

Decent compensation and benefits, summer hours and week-off during Christmas/New Year. 35 hour work week if you have a flexible boss (most people put in 40+). Loyal old-timers are rewarded generously with promotions and bonuses especially if the owners know them even if they have minimal education. This is a pro for old-timers.

Management tends to hire up, i.e. folks with advanced degrees and more years of experience hired to do manual/grunt work. As such there is no prospect for career advancement and growth, and minimal or no exposure outside the department unless you are a shining star. Promotions come by once in 6-7 years if you are exceptional. If you were hired as a scientist you will stay in the lab till you retire, while your supervisor takes the credit.
Company is very insular, i.e. no knowledge of happenings/exposure to pharmaceutical business in general unless it has to do with abuse-deterrent products. Many people at middle-management level with limited number of junior scientists, i.e. when there are more Associate Directors than scientists you can imagine who does the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no money to implement new business strategies and owners are not going to pay for it. Now that you have gotten rid of the R&D, there is no innovation and creativity. Cut your losses and sell your brands to the highest bidder.
