Lots of opportunity to learn and grow. It's been pretty easy for me to find pieces of work that need to be done that are interesting projects. I also like how managers are individual contributors as well so it makes it less likely that they become out of touch with the challenges that engineers face daily.
One problem with always promoting the management staff form the engineer ranks is that the skill set required to be a good manager is sometimes hard to find in an engineer. Also, those that are promoted to a management role don't seem to get any training in the new position.
Advice to Management
Set up some type of training for the new managers so that they can become more effective.
