Current Employee - National Account Manager in Lincolnshire, IL

I have been working at Quill full-time (more than 3 years)

The only thing good there was some of the people I worked with. There are a lot of decent people there, who are willing to help you out. The pay used to be decent, but not anymore. A year ago it was a decent place to work. They have a hilarious awards meeting every month where they make managers hand out awards to the employees instead of actually paying them a bonus for their hard work. It's funny to watch the managers act like they actually care. Lots of free sharpies.

Where do I start. Over the past year they have changed the compensation for Account Managers multiple times. Each time the reps lose more money. They care more about non sales metrics like your sell time than actual sales numbers. They hold the reps accountable, but none of the managers are held to any standards. The managers spend their days in useless secret meetings. All the decent managers have either left the company, or have taken different positions in the company. There are far too many layers management. The main sales manager has no background in sales what so ever. The culture there is now extremely toxic, and negative. Every couple years they get rid of most of the reps, and start again. Clearly this is what they are doing now. They are hiring people with little experience in inside sales so they don't realize how bad it really is there. If you have actual sales experience apply elsewhere unless you enjoy extreme micromanagement. This company is owned by Staples so even if Quill has a great year it doesn't matter if Staples did poorly. If you know the right people there you can move up very quickly. I have seen really great sales people passed up for promotions, and other jobs in the company. Till they get rid of the current senior sales management nothing positive will happen. If you still want to work for this company at least work on the Staples side, not the Quill side

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's only a matter of time till they stop blaming the sales reps, and start blaming you. Stop focusing on useless metrics, and let the sales people actually spend their days selling. Get rid of all the useless layers of management that do nothing. It's pathetic you need a manager to manage only 6 reps. My advice to the true upper management there that don't work on the sales floor is to go up there, and talk to the reps and see how miserable they are. Stop setting goals that will not be reached.
