    Defense contractor extraordinaire

Current Employee - Senior Systems Engineer I (E03) in El Segundo, CA

I have been working at Raytheon full-time

    Pros

-Very flexible work schedule; not only 9x80 availability, but rolling mod time allows 3 week bank of time above/below 40h for any personal needs
-Having SAP or TS = guaranteed job security
-Compensation is fairly high for actual deliverables

    Cons

-Matrix organization poster child. You will never meet all the people on your 'team'. Ever. Toss all the 'soft skills' interview questions out the window, there is zero teamwork at a defense contractor, especially this one
-Incredibly (and questionably) top heavy; I currently have 1 supervisor and 3 managers, only 2 of whom even know I exist
-95% of the engineers are EEs, which is good on some levels but can also be challenging, especially when trying to bring in outside/new problem approaches
-Very business-cultured engineering company; pictures of executives all over the hallways and webpages with everybody doing whatever they can to become the next E88 or PM. Zero mentoring or assistance for others unless it is directly beneficial to one's own self-interest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company runs nothing like an ~63k-employee company should....soooooo many redundant processes, buried information, moving inertia/red tape, etc. The hobbled-together patchwork fixes to alleviate these issues has made the problem worse, it's about time to scrap many processes and rebuild from the ground up
