I have been working at Redfin

    Pros

    - Team approach and access to other resources
    - Paid a salary as employee or per event as contractor...not waiting on deal to close
    - Employees have office equipment supplied to them, paid health insurance, and cell phone bill paid
    - Impressive, user friendly website and technology for employees/contractors

    Cons

    - Chicago management is ineffective: poor personnel decisions and lack of performance based decisions especially by one manager, cliquish with long-term friends & family members being rewarded/preferred, widely inconsistent handling of employees/contractors, and false statements of constraints allowed by law. One particular manager avoids conflict with customers and pushes it back on the employees.
    - Some team leads are good while others don't do anything to get the team together and push their responsibilities onto employees.
    - Paid less as agent than industry standard....smaller bonus amount not commission
    - Part of commission is given back to buyer which leaves less money for agent bonuses
    - Over-hiring in some Chicago areas makes it difficult to be assigned enough paid events
    - Contractors are left out on their own and not included in communication or feedback. Contractors handle many of the activities for customers and help make the company successful. That should be more recognized by management.
    - Lack of training
    - Limited career path for contractors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break up the friends/family members cliques in Chicago office. Family members managing other family members resulted in multiple situations of preferential treatment and bias against other team members. Base promotions and hiring decisions on performance and quality not how long someone has been there or if their friend is in management. Have standards for team leads and survey their teams for feedback...very inconsistent between teams. Include contractors more in company communication and feedback on supervisors. Provide option to purchase group health insurance for contractors.
