I have been working at Ross Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company discount (20%) is nice considering how cheap everything already is, and it gets doubled (to 40%) on a couple weeks out of the year, however this is usually during seasons where there is not much to choose from and doesn't apply to jewelry/fragrances. Also, in my experience, if you give them a decent amount of advance, the schedule is fairly flexible. OK for a first job for a teenager who can't get more relevant work experience (but pretty sad otherwise). Occasionally, you might have a positive interaction with a customer.

    Cons

As a retail worker you will be valued very little but expected to work very hard for little pay. We're talking 25 cent / year raises maximum unless you get a title change, which is unlikely. the job will certainly make you appreciate working better jobs later on. Very little upward mobility, at my store they hired managers from outside. The store I worked at was disgusting and the clientele had little to no regard for the cleanliness of the store, although this may vary based on region. Customers will blame you for things that are out of your control and disrespect you to your face. Skills gained here are largely irrelevant in more upwardly mobile fields or companies. High turnover with management and complaints/bad attitude from those who did stick around long-term. Merchandise is disrespected and there is little pride throughout the employees in what is being sold.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider making this a more meaningful job. Right now its obvious what this is: a way for you to cash in on extra stock from other retailers by marking it down extremely low and moving it fast, and I feel that employees are treated with a similar value to the merchandise. I understand margins are probably low but this is not a company that I will ever recommend based on my personal experience or the values the company exposed to me. The attitudes passed down from upper management seemed negative and there was very little encouragement from their sphere. If I had to sum up my Ross experience in a word: "Cheap".

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
