Rubio's is a great place to work as your first job. The work is easy, and you don't know have to worry about taking it home with you at the end of your shift. During your first few weeks, you might be intimidated by all the stuff you have to remember, but everything will eventually becomes routine and simple. Main task include taking orders as a cashier and expediting food to customers. In addition, depending on your hours, you may have to "open" the store by preparing salsa for the salsa bars and cutting limes and lemons. Later hours involve "closing" the store by putting away salsa, and cleaning up the store for the following day. Other duties, which may seem random, include wiping down tables, sweeping floors (and mopping up spills and mess. . . ), preparing chip bags, taking out the garbage, and making sure the entire front of the store is clean and presentable. Employees are nice and helpful, and also very lenient and sympathetic. Customer service is key, even amongst their own employees, so don't be afraid to ask questions or ask help about things you don't know. You also get a 50% discount on any item you order in the store, so if you're hungry you can get your fish taco's for real cheap even on days when it's not Taco Tuesday! You also get medical insurance, and if you want you can add dental to your plan. All medical and dental insurance gets deducted directly out of your paycheck every two weeks. In addition, you may request for direct deposit, so you don't have to wait every Friday for your check.
One of the biggest problems is the customers - because Rubio's is known for excellent in both quality and service, many customers will (and I guarantee it) try to take advantage of your kindness. For example, they will expect you to clean after their mess which can be as little as a few drops of salsa on the table, to huge soda spills and rice splatters from their own children. Speaking of rice, be warned that this is a side that almost every parent will order and will always end up on the floor even if you offer to give them a plate/bowl to have the child eat from. Also, watch out for Taco Tuesday. It is one of the worst days of the week you will work. People on those days are incredibly cheap, irritable, and impatient. You must be patient with them even if they constantly ask you for the time for when Taco Tuesday starts, which is EXACTLY after 2:30PM. In addition, although management may be very lenient, make sure they aren't just screwing around. Sometimes you might get stuck with a bad manager (I've only heard stories luckily) and they might make you do everything - and I mean EVERYTHING. This is because management can be very incompetent and unprofessional. Not all the stores are run the same, so if you're not lucky, you might end up dealing with too much stress from shift leaders or General Manager who have no clue how to actually run the store. Bad management can also lead to some horrible training - to which you might get blamed for even if you're new. Also, the pay is very low for all that you do. Minimum Wage. Don't expect to make a career unless you are very VERY willing to do 110% everyday at work.
Advice to Management
Make sure all of your Shift Leaders and General Managers are well-trained and prepared to handle stress. A lot of them are very unprofessional, and often rely too much on the cooks and the GSA's to handle everything. They also do a very bad job at knowing their own store. Just because they have a bigger position doesn't mean they should automatically be assumed as "professional", even they need some good advice and need to be check up on to assure that the company is prospering.
