Former Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in Albany, NY

I worked at SUNY Albany full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Get to do what you love. Follow your own research interests, teach students, gain academic experience.

    Cons

Dosnt pay great to be a grad student; lots of hours of work, no additional compensation; contract renewal varies from year to year (only first 3 out of 5 year program guaranteed).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Graduate assistantships should be guaranteed for the full length of one's program of study, even if it means accepting fewer students into each program; its stressful enough being a grad student as it is without having to worry about whether or not you will get rehired, or backup option have to adjunct teach to make ends meet (barely!). Especially for those with families, it would be best to have more stability! That said, the admin staff does their very best to accommodate everyone who wants either a research or teaching assistantship and does a fantastic job of coordinating the various preferences of all the applicants. Everyone usually gets something, and that is saying a LOT because a good deal of hard work goes into making that happen each and every year, tirelessly.
