Great mgmt & coworkers, but commission-draw system stinks

I have been working at Saks Fifth Avenue full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

At the Huntington Station store, management is hugely appreciative and treats you very well. There is a strong emphasis on work-life balance, and management is always having events in appreciation for service awards which the sales force wins for our store. Overall, sales associates are exceptionally friendly and there is a culture of cooperation and respect throughout the store.

    Company health benefits are outstanding.

If you're in management or are one of a select few sales professionals, you are making a good living. If you're the majority of the sales force, returns are so large and frequent that you are making your draw of $10 an hour only, no matter how hard you work. It only takes a few big returns per week to hang you out to dry.

The mall is adding a second story (finally - it was designed for this in the first place), and will be adding stores like Anthropologie, Tiffany & Co, Henri Bendel, etc. It's going very upscale to compete with the Americana Mall in Manhasset. Construction is well underway, and some of these new stores are slated to open in June 2012.

Since there is no food court in this mall, it doesn't attract thuggish teenagers who hang out there all day and night. It's substantially safer and calmer than the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City.

    Cons

Throughout the store, there are huge percentages of returns which end up killing your commission and keeping you making only draw, or not much more than that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put people on hourly instead of commission-draw and reduce your turnover. You've got some fantastic sales professionals in this store who can't afford to stay and work full-time for a draw of only $10 an hour, and have medical benefits expenses coming out of that tiny amount of income.
