I have been working at Salinas Union High School District

    Pros

If you enjoy the weather of the coastal region of the central coast of CA it is a great place. The district is better than most of the Salinas Valley, in terms of pay and bennies, but far below the standards of the Bay Area and other areas where housing is out of site. The district has a good one week seminar for new teachers and it pays ok for us to go there, but not at per diem rate. Work day is short 7 hrs and only have 5 classes and a prep period every day. With only 5 classes there are not so many names to learn and essays to read, one friend in another district has 7 mandatory classes and twisting of his arm for 8 without a prep.

    Cons

Housing in the near area is very high for areas that are safe to live. Salinas has had many shootings and murders this year. The area is high Hispanic with heavy influence of gangs the "banger" mentality is prevalent through out the schools. Dropout rate is high, but getting better according Rodger the Superintendent. Teachers get talked at a lot, and even with our late starts to allow us to “collaborate” through our “Professional Learning Communities” we are told what we need to discuss and how to do discuss it. I would not be surprised if all the reports we have produced are sitting in a file, never been read, just waiting for the people from Western Assoc. of Schools and Colleges to come by and see how much we have done. Not that it has done any good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop talking at your employees and ask us for help, we are professionals with a lot of experience between us. If you want the holy grail of yours....API to increase you need us on board. From what I have seen and heard from talking to others is that many are very frustrated and not getting the help and support from P's AP's and the DO.
