I have been working at SamTrans full-time (More than 3 years)
First thing to understand here is that each department is managed quite differently. My department is very casual, as long as you get your work done. There is flexibility if you need it. Some departments are tough to work in, I understand. The biggest general pro is the commute. My commute costs me $0. Staff at Central (San Carlos) get a free Caltrain GoPass and SamTrans rides. That took me off 101, which alone was worth it, but add in the ZERO cost of my commute and it's a whole new life suddenly. That's money in the bank right there. There's a chance to do some real good here. Transportation is one of our nation's biggest challenges right now and it directly relates to livable cities, community and environmental health. With High Speed Rail and Caltrain Modernization happening, it's very exciting time around here. The benefits here are very good. CalPERS is good. Medical, dental and vision. PTO and floating holidays. My position is quite rewarding and exciting, but not all roles here are.
There's a new GM in charge now and a re-org is on the horizon. Hopefully this will help reinvigorate the aging managers and processes in place. It does have a bit of that "government agency" feel.
Advice to Management
Modernize!! Recruit and retain younger talent. Look around the Valley and see what other companies do around their corporate culture.
