It's a joy and breath of fresh air to work at Samford after having spent decades working for public universities.

I have been working at Samford University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The campus is gorgeous, the people are positive and genuinely love working here. The leadership is strong, positive and supportive of the faculty and staff. Samford is a Baptist university, but employees of all faiths or no faith work here and feel welcomed. Students here are more conscientious about their studies than many who attend public universities. There is no alcohol allowed on campus so negative behaviors associated with alcohol are nil. Morale among faculty and staff is very high. I very much appreciate the fact that we are encouraged to express our faith and there are no policies designed to suppress expressions of faith as there are at public universities. Because most of the faculty, staff and students share common values, there is a stronger feeling of community and cohesion. The university has a very good health plan and the retirement plan is a 403b so it is not subject to the state legislature or political pressure. They value quality personnel and don't fire people except for poor performance.Faculty and staff get free tickets to great cultural events on campus. Every Friday, faculty and staff can eat in the cafeteria for $2.00. This is to encourage colleagues to eat together and socialize more. Very good for morale. Good opportunities for professional development for faculty.

    Cons

The pay is not very high for staff and low-ranking faculty. Unused vacation time doesn't roll over into the next fiscal year.
