I have been working at San Diego Community College District part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a professor at Mesa College, I truly enjoy what I teach. My students (for the most part) are engaged and eager to learn. I love my job.

    Cons

Payroll and compensation are incompetent. Expect not to get paid, more than once, randomly, and have to chase your money down. Expect to get paid less than initially promised, and to have piles of "Collective Bargaining" mumbo-jumbo thrown at you like you're an uneducated clod. It's frustrating and dishonest. But, it's the system. As an adjunct (and most of us are), rights are severely limited. Raise your voice too loud only if you can risk being replaced. We're expendable, and the powers that be know this. It's demoralizing and unjust.

    Advice to Management

Hire more full-time faculty. Most people I've worked with in administration are wonderful. A few (again, in payroll and compensation, specifically) are dismissive and condescending. Treat adjuncts like people. We deserve our rights, too.
