I have been working at San Francisco Health Plan full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great mission-driven organization where at the end of the week (if you really think about it), you can honestly feel that you've made a difference for those who have traditionally been marginalized & disadvantaged and those who have recently joined the ranks of the uninsured by virtue of the economic downturn. I've worked in very large health plans, and I've never felt that before. The organization has benefited from California's expansion of Medi-Cal and San Francisco County's commitment to universal access to care, which has led to unprecedented growth in membership (customers) and in its own workforce. Moving beyond "startup" mode and increasing workforce never easy, and I have to say that SF Health Plan has done a good job in looking inward to figure out how to manage this cultural transformation. This includes regular messaging from the Executive Team to the staff, developing employee recognition programs, etc. Sure...staff sometimes grumble that there are too many meetings on this, but compared to other well-known larger organizations where I've worked, it's really not excessive and in my view, more effective than what I've experienced before.

On the whole, SF Health Plan employers are bright, motivated, passionate who want to do the right thing for its members. For those interested in learning about many sides of healthcare financing, operations, and delivery of healthcare services, I think ample opportunity for such learning exists because it's still small enough to avoid too much silo'ing & segregation.

As for the compensation, sure, you could always find a place that pays better. But the benefits are the best that I've experienced previously, so that makes up for the lower pay (e.g. generous vacation time, pension, and quicker than usual vesting schedule). Finally, there really is work-life balance, a noticeable difference from where I've worked before.

    Cons

The on-boarding process for new people to the organization should be improved so that they can quickly get up to speed and contribute sooner. It's a reflection of SF Health Plan's "startup" nature but the organization working on this area. Issues of limited resources (no different from any organization) exists and directionality based on prioritization methods aren't embraced as universally as they could be. This is an inherently more difficult area to improve and I think that, in general, it is improving and will improve more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This pertains to all levels of management (from Executive Team to Managers/Supervisors): Continue to walk-the-walk, talk-the-talk -- staff notice & appreciate it. Continue to work together and reach across the aisle to achieve meaningful and effective cross functional collaboration.
