I have been working at Shearman & Sterling full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The firm is undergoing many innovative and necessary changes.

    Cons

No one cares what happens if it's not at management level.

There is zero accountability for the admin staff and it has lead to extremely low moral.

We have a very ineffective HR staff who does not offer any incentives/training for employees.

Many of the staff complain to each other as their worries/issues have gone unaddressed by HR...seemingly this has been the trend for the past 140 years.

There is no such thing as constructive criticism at Shearman, just negative or positive, and neither is used to better the firm, or cultural environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A full scale global employee study would be an eye opener, and hopefully management would be able to use it in a constructive manner. Innovation needs to begin within.

I'd highly suggest 360 reviews, and for the exit interviews to be used as lessons learned instead of being filed away never to be seen or heard from again.

Happy employees work harder, faster and more effectively. Any HR study can tell you that, yet it seems to go ignored at Shearman. A true cultural change needs to happen, fast.
