    I have been working at Shire Pharmaceuticals


    Salaries and benefits are comparable to other similar companies in MA. Vesting schedule is good; The reorganization efforts of past twenty months are paying benefits with the growth of company. Lots of jobs in MA at this time. R&D leadership seems to have vision and balance in moving organization forward. The growth is evident with acquisitions. People seem to be invested in working together to be successful.


    Growth and integration of the business units has identified gaps in processes that need to be addressed so that there is consistency across the company. Jobs are moving from PA location but majority of employees do not want to move to MA so the people in MA are faced with trying to do the work of many while company hires people to fill the jobs. Remnants of culture that resists sharing information for various reasons needs to be replaced with a culture of sharing information broadly. Would benefit from onsite IT organization with organized processes for validation when working with new programs, whether on Shire platform or hosted by a vendor. Shire does not seem to have written policies that allow working schedules that are staggered, flexible hours, or working remotely on a regular basis. Company seems to reject idea of working remotely or commuting to site on a regular basis (must be in Massachusetts, M-F).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The flattening of the organization is more hindrance than help in many ways and does not help promote a career ladder in Shire. People want to know that there are career paths and opportunities to move around in a company to learn and grow. Build a career ladder for recruitment and retention; consider offering a program with opportunities for people to start at more junior positions and be mentored by current employees. Enrollment into such a program would require agreement to stay with Shire for some period of time, similar to relocation agreements.
     As more and more people have ability to work remotely, consider adding more flexibility to work schedules. Stop deferring so much to PWC because many of the consultants do not understand the work and their inability to get it right the first time is causing delays in getting more efficient and improving compliance. Company was closed for last week of 2014 and we hope that this shut-down continues each year.
