I worked at Sierra Nevada Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

SNC has an unbeatable 401k; that is probably the only really positive thing about working here. The overseas teams have a great family feel and most are great people to work with.

    Cons

IMS has fallen pretty far from the great program it had in the past. They cut corners to save money and win a contract, pairing with a horrible prime who has no business working in defense. They grossly underpay their more newly hired deployed personnel and do not reward employees for their hard work or superior performance with promotions, raises, or bonuses (unless you are a part of the good ol' boys club of course). There is almost no chance for career advancement here, unless you are good friends with the program managers. Some employees hardly make enough to support their families, while they are deployed overseas for sometimes 9 months out of the year. They have lost almost all of their talent, as many move on to competitors or just become completely fed up with the lack of support. It is obvious they do not care about the people who work for them, which is hilarious since one of SNC's values is, "people are our most important asset." This is definitely not true at IMS. The planes are inadequate for the mission, and there have been an increasing number of poorly qualified personnel that have no business flying on a plane or fixing aircraft. Management is a joke for the most part; there is hardly anyone in that office that is even vaguely qualified to run a program, and the program's poor performance is a direct reflection of that. The lack of integrity and amount of backstabbing is astounding, and almost no one can be trusted. You would think the people in charge would be more moral than some of the behaviors we have all observed, such as the inappropriate relationships with subordinates, the customer, the prime, etc... Most of these people are married with children. It is also quite evident that some of these inappropriate work relationships allowed certain individuals to get rapidly promoted to positions they were in no way qualified for. There are many instances of hypocrisy at its finest. People get promoted because they are buddies with upper management, although many of these people are lazy, unqualified, and have poor management skills.

    Advice to Management

If SNC does not step up their game, they are going to be a joke in this community pretty shortly. Even though you are fulfilling your contractual obligations, it should not be about quantity. Quality needs to have greater focus. Work harder on retaining quality individuals through incentives; let them know they are doing a great job and reward them. Promote people who deserve it, work hard, do a great job, and are a great face for your program. Cut profits for the sake of your reputation; it will be more beneficial in the long run. Fix your aircraft and help your people; they are the ones who hold this together. You do important work, and it is a shame you are putting forth such a terrible product. Corporate needs to have a hard look at what is going on in Hagerstown; it truly looks poorly on SNC as a whole.
