I worked at Solazyme full-time (More than 5 years)
The company exhibits a rarity in the biotechnology world - it has defined target market for multiple areas of implementation, penetration, in addition to technology that simply works. From a purely technical standpoint, they have the human capital to make it happen.
Perhaps an understatement: the company's progress has been halted by chronic mismanagement. Solazyme is quite top-heavy so there's multiple individuals taking the company in multiple misguided directions. At the end of the day we have to ask: where are we going? I'm still asking.
Advice to Management
Replace the CEO, the market has been begging for it for years. Concentrate on the products that work instead of anything that gets attention by the media. Hire top talent to build your technology instead of top talent with an MBA in mismanagement... they were shown the door at their previous employer for a reason.
