I worked at South Bay Mental Health Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Outreach allows you to be mostly independent, flexible schedule, you become the keeper of your success - those who work hard and are ambitious will find their target clients, work their ideal schedule, and work toward their target income.

    Cons

Facilitates burnout - those who are successful receive less support, everything is all about the numbers and less about the clients. For the most part, supervision is number-centric unless the clinician drives it toward the clients. Most supervisors are successful clinicians, which is good and bad -- good clinicians don't always make good supervisors, and there was not a strong process in coaching new supervisors. Outreach can also be isolating and the office environment is such that those who are in the office are very much aware that they are not billing (making money) and are usually frustrated, angry, and outwardly negative -- many people just avoid the office except when mandated (staff meetings, supervision). Beyond supervisor and some program directors, there is minimal connection to the agency as a whole. Sites are not in good condition (except Brockton headquarters) and staff feel disconnected after they leave orientation. There is a lot of turnover, as the structure is a good fit for new graduates who often decide 1-2 months in that this work is not for them -- this frustrated clients and is an ongoing cycle that unfortunately creates a negative reputation in the community.

    Advice to Management

The current model is a great fit for new graduates who are extremely flexible and willing to learn as they go. Almost anyone and everyone gets hired - better screen applicants and hire employees who will work well with your outreach and salary structure and there will be less turnover and less frustration for those professionals later in their career looking to do a specific role within a restricted schedule and financial security due to growing families and responsibilities.
