I have been working at Southern California Edison (Less than a year)
A large company with a lot of resources for employees and many career opportunities based on your knowledge and goals. The core business units of this company have exciting changes ahead for those who are on board.
The utility industry is changing and many ingrained ways of working and the SCE culture must change for the utility to survive and remain relevant. The company is focusing on operational excellence but the term has become a euphemism for layoffs so morale is suffering. The business model of the future is vague and not well articulated for the general employee population.
Advice to Management
Hold your officers and leaders accountable for delivering the results you want. Across the board layoffs are not the only way to achieve operational excellence. Adopt a consistent method (like Lean or Six Sigma or anything) to identify real business opportunities to reduce expense and/or improve reliability and then support that consistent approach from the top. Explain where SCE is going in the future - what will the company look like? What do we need to get better at? What do we need to stop doing?
