Former Employee - Co-Manager in Chicago, IL
Former Employee - Co-Manager in Chicago, IL

I worked at Speedway LLC full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -Obtained some leadership experience
-Salary was not terrible for starting out as a co-manager w/some bonus programs(only helpful if you worked at a big store)
-Had close working relationships/friendships with pretty much all my co-workers
-Working with people from different backgrounds and ethnicities----cultural melting pot

    Cons

-Do Not Be Fooled---some of the "great" reviews below have probably been written by HR people who are desperate to get some good words in about this terrible company.
-District Managers constantly criticize you...they do not encourage you, do not provide constructive feedback, they do not care about the employees. You are just a number to them, not a human being.
-Have been out of this place for a couple years, but from what I remember, constantly pushed suggestive selling, which is good to a degree, but most people don't want to buy your candy and gum every week they come to the store. It got a little too pushy at certain points and felt like we were trying to force these items onto customers. Not always the best customer service.
-Worst part of this company=cheapness with labor hrs. Limit # of hrs a store can schedule its employees per week, causing shortage of workers during certain shifts which causes longer lines at the register, and worse customer service.
-Hrs as an assistant manager were all over the place including 3rd shift, 2nd shift, and weekend duty. If you wanted to have a social life, this is not the job for you. While the managers get the weekends off except for 1 Saturday per month, the assistant managers are the worker bees, having to work the bad hrs, having to work the weekends, was extremely unfair.
-Never got the recognition or respect for being a good worker. I am happy to say I have received that at the current company I work for, WHICH IS NOT SPEEDWAY.
    -ZERO ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Get your heads out of the toilet and fix your leadership and management issues because your workforce is tired of being treated like a number, treat these people with respect. They are the backbone of your organization and you treat them worse than garbage. I'd rather work as a janitor if I had do it over again.
