I have been working at State of Alaska full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The People! The only reason I have stuck it out for so long here is the people I work with.

    Cons

There is no opportunity for advancement if you start at a clerical level. Professional positions cannot be moved into even if you qualify if you are clerical the job classification determines if you can move upward and has nothing to do with the individual's knowledge, skills or abilities to do a given job.
Six supervisor/bosses in six years is ridiculous! You lose way too much knowledge of the history of the work done when turnover of management is high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the blocks to staff moving upward. Job classifications should NOT be a requirement for a higher level job. There should be a solid base of clerical support for every unit with the ability to move rapidly upward to attract and keep skilled talented people otherwise you have a lot of turnover and a lot of retraining.
