A culture change to micro-management has ruined all aspects of this organization

I have been working at State of Indiana Department of Workforce Development full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Most jobs in this organization pay a living wage. The hours are steady. Paid time off is generous. Occasionally, one may have an opportunity to help someone.

    Cons

Everything is all messed up. Various organizations with competing interests defer to each other, so there is no accountability in the end, only a lot of finger pointing, no follow up and no follow through. Managers will not take risks or make decisions; they often re-frame questions to get self-serving answers-- the singular objective being to cover their butts. Fear pervades the organization. Employees are dis-empowered from doing their jobs. Taxpayers are cheated and the public is left to fend for themselves. On top of all that, wages have stagnated. Raises for State employees have disappeared over the past several years while the costs of living have increased. Health insurance and other benefits have been reduced, and risk has been shifted to the employee. Retirement and pension have evaporated. Only a rube would continue to work for this organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow some basic best practices to engage employees and create job satisfaction. You will be surprised with the results.
