I worked at Steward Health Care System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Large medical center which is a teaching hospital for Tufts Medical School and several nursing schools in the area. Many resources for further education and training. Journal clubs, large medical library, many research and outreach opportunities. Doctor's and midlevel colleagues are supportive and knowledgeable. There are several opportunities for advancement in a particular area.

    Cons

Focus is on how much money hospital and practices can make with little focus on patient care. Use a old fashioned cookie cutter model for all patient's. Staff and administration are generally not supportive of physicians, PA's, and NP's. There is no sense of a medical team - it's more PCP'S and nurses vs. administration vs. other staff. Communication is the same and I often found that groups had difficulty communicating clearly with one another. Ultimately this would affect patient care on a daily basis

Charts are often still in paper format despite having EMR in the office for over 2 years. Even scanned paper charts in the EMR were often missing information creating a lot of extra work for staff and PCP's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to PCP's as we intimately know our patient population. Would like clearer communication and all staff meetings. Continue having medical and nurse practitioner student's in the office - they bring valuable new insights/information and their enthusiasm.
