I have been working at Synacor full-time

Currently profitable - Synacor has a very profitable business in its portal advertising business. Which keeps the company afloat even with its poor executive leadership and and HR. Good employees - there are plenty of good people and talent at Synacor - very helpful and knowledgeable.

Company is very top heavy with executives that do not add value to the company. I would not call the executives leaders by any stretch of the imagination. They want to be a product company but the company is structured like a service company. Their opinions change with the wind. Senior management focuses on dates vs creating products the market wants. Once can only assume they are just playing it safe and ride out what life the company has left. Product and Engineering executive leadership did not relay any strategy or visionary thinking. They buy new companies which is great but don't really have an business plan or operational plan to harness the new talent and capitalize on those companies they purchase therefore its more of the same - relying on portal revenues and while the business wastes away. HR is very old-school and do not promote the best employees or employees most likely to have a positive effect on the company. Bizarre org chart with layers of ineffectual execs. Hiring procedures & employee training seems more like a government department than a high tech company. Office is old and outdated. Challenging to impress new hires with a office that looks like 1992. HR wise vacation is very limited and inflexible, even for senior hires. Does not have VP Marketing. Therefore there is no marketing plan for the company. Does not have a VP of HR. Company execs and middle management pretend they want feedback and how to improve the team but routinely ignore requests to improve things.

    Advice to Management

Synacor has tremendous potential in its employees however it needs a very big shakeup in its corp culture -- executive thinking, market leadership, risk taking and accountability. Until then the Executives will continue to have their meetings and will tinker here and there and without really driving the business forward and beyond industry peers. Poor performance by executives should be scrutinized acted upon.
