    I worked at Synta Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Wonderful, bright, and hard working co-workers. Good science. Small company where everyone knows everybody.

    Cons

    As with any small company it has a lot of growing pains to work through. Operations and organization are chaotic. This company has experienced very high turnover even during “good times” when spirits should be high. There is virtually no room for advancement, and professional development is not valued. Most people are miserable, overworked and under-appreciated. To that end, HR is completely useless, out-of-touch and is deaf to employee suggestions. Synta pays poorly across the board (expect for senior management), and offers the minimum benefits compared to industry. Its recognition program is weak, arbitrary and administered sporadically.

    But the BIGGEST PROBLEM is the CEO who is an arrogant egomaniac with absolutely no leadership skills. He has a complete lack of humility and zero capacity to learn from his past mistakes to the detriment of the company. He bullies his senior management team to the point of poor decision-making. He finger-points when things go wrong because of his bad decisions. CEO is not respected and disliked company-wide. He has a poor reputation outside of Synta as well. He has no interpersonal skills- making interaction with him extremely awkward. If he left the company would be a great place to work!
