I worked at Target part-time (Less than a year)
For the most part, co-workers were very friendly, helpful and cooperative. There was a good feeling of camaraderie among those of us unloading the trucks, despite the uncivilized hour of 0400!
The so-called "management" was extremely young, immature and obviously inexperienced. I had one manager grab an empty box from my hand to show me how to break it down and how to properly dispose of the plastic surrounding it. On another occasion, I was given 26 rows of product...in toys...to stock. I was told how long it should take and when I should be done. The manager must have checked-up on me at least a half-dozen times, telling me how far behind I was...totally DEmotivating. I quit later that morning.
Advice to Management
I recognize and appreciate that things must be done in a fast, efficient and expeditious manner, but not at the expense of worker dignity and self-esteem. Also, the managers would move people around, having them stock different aisles/departments. I would think that it would be more productive to have team members stock the same rows/aisles daily so that they became intimately familiar with products and their respective shelf placement. Lastly, I question the $.50/hr additional stipend for working 0400-0800; if an employee came in at 0400 and worked PAST 0800, the pay rate would return to the regular rate (in my case, this was $8.50/hr). Isn't the extra $.50/hr given because of the early hour at which one must start...and, if so, it should continue until that "shift" is over, or until the employee clocks out. My scheduled hours were 0400-0800, but often I was asked to work past 0800...quite frankly, not only was there no incentive for me to do so, but there was actually a DIS-incentive. In essence, I was taking a "pay cut" for working past 0800!
