I have been working at Target as an intern (Less than a year)
The pay is the best in retail operations. The people are the best in retail - they're friendlier, happier to be there, and just overall better than retail employees in other retail chains. The culture is the best in retail. It ties directly into the people, but it really is a fast, fun, and friendly culture and atmosphere working at Target - at least more so than other retailers. The benefits are ridiculously great, 10% off everything in the store, plus 5% with the REDcard, plus coupons, Cartwheel, and another 20% off all fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, and active-wear.
It's still retail. The hours aren't terrible, but they aren't great. As an intern and as an ETL you work every other weekend (one weekend you open, one weekend you close), otherwise you close one night a week and have a set day each week you have off. Unrealistic goals and expectations - do more with less retail mentality. Huge disconnect from corporate, little corporate support even in the home market.
Advice to Management
None at the store level, they do the best with what they're given. However corporate and headquarters really needs to level with the stores.
