I have been working at Target full-time (More than 10 years)
Full time, set work schedule, the hours are not great on any key but they never change, which is nice. $20/hour+ for full time team members. Friendly atmosphere, team focused. The work is pretty demanding and Target is a demanding employer, but they are fair. Vacation time is accrued generously based on hours worked. 10% discount on everything in store always, and occasional bonus employee discounts.
Target used to be a terrific employer but over the last two years priorities have clearly shifted. Employees are now liabilities, rather than assets. And fundamentally, the company seems to have made shareholders the priority instead of the customer. Some cost cutting strategies are now normal in retail, but still borderline unethical. Countless examples such as mass layoffs, pension and benefit time eliminations all have taken place but the most shattering is that full time team members are now being replaced by temporary associates, These temps are required to work full time hours, performing highly physical and skilled labor for below-poverty-line-wages, without any health benefits or vacation time. Target is at best, "mostly fair" to it's own employees, but the temps are treated like 2nd class citizens, it's eerily reminiscent of pre 1960s America. They do much of the heavy lifting and yet they are disregarded. Temps may not attend our team meetings. They may not stretch with the Target teams they work with. They are not allowed to take break in certain break rooms. I joined the company as an 18 year old boy. Target's high expectations and formerly high culture have made me a better man.
Advice to Management
Productivity is sexy, but you'll respect and rely on the experience and knowledge your team members have more than anything. This works both ways, a leader with experience and job knowledge, will garnish respect from the team by staffing them for success and identifying and removing obstacles . Running your department correctly is the sharpest way to drive performance.
