I worked at Teavana part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Tea discounts and free tee while working. They were pretty lax about the schedule but it was sometimes a bad thing because they would screw up and give me days I couldn't work, then just tell me "oh don't come in then" but if you needed a day off they gave it to you.

    Cons

When I worked there- you generally start at minimum wage and make commission based on your sales. However, if you don't meet a certain quota you don't make any commission- even if you were a dollar away from it. If the manager likes you they put you in the tea counter where you make more sales. You're supposed to rotate but most stores won't follow the rotation schedule to ensure everyone has a fair chance to make money.

I went into the job with a very holistic approach. I thought the job would want you to help people discover tea for all its benefits but instead they just want you to up sell everyone and make a buck no matter what.

They encourage you to mislead customers. They make you tell people their sugar has less calories per teaspoon...which is only true because the larger granules don't compact as easily. But its just sugar and it has the same calorie content per weight. They also want you up sell everything anyone is interested in. If they want a tea ball you are supposed to sell them into a mug with a strainer. If they want sencha you're supposed to try to sell them gyokuru. Its shady and I wasn't comfortable doing it.

My manager also would pick on certain people. Some girls could wear sneakers and he wouldn't care but if I did (with a doctors note because I had foot surgery and needed special shoes) he made a stink about it. He would pull my pants every day to make sure they weren't yoga pants, which to me is really inappropriate but other employees were wearing yoga pants or jeggings and he didn't care. It was only a few of us that got discriminated against.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the commission. As a customer I hate going to Teavana stores because people are always pushing me to buy things. At least let employees make their commission regardless of the "goal" number so they don't feel so discouraged when they know they won't make it. Because if you're far from your goal you won't bother trying.
