Current Employee - Corporate in San Antonio, TX

I have been working at Tesoro Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is strong relative to similar companies in area (Salary, 401k match, Bonus Potential, Profit sharing).
Yearly vacation based on overall work experience rather than tenure at company.
Great medical plan with relatively low employee contribution requirements.
Company is growing like crazy through acquisitions.
Strong job stability with many long time employees.
Encouraged to change roles every 18-24 months in order to gain new experience.
Corporate office in San Antonio is a top rate facility with on-site fitness center, locker rooms, cafeteria, covered parking, and doctors office.
Greg Goff (current CEO) might be a genius when it comes to long term planning and strategic growth.

    Cons

Extremely sterile corporate culture; Tesoro wants to be progressive and fun but the commitment just isn't there.
Actively removing shared employee space (break rooms/meeting rooms) in order to give managers larger offices.
Very little interaction between senior leadership and employees with institutionalized barriers (employees caught on executive floor without a reason have been punished and even fired).
It's a company that rewards people who know how to the play the "corporate politics" game; those who are good at maneuvering their way into the offices of senior leadership on a regular basis are generally the ones who are getting promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everyone enjoys the strong growth the company is experiencing, but growing too fast can have dramatic negative impacts to the company culture. Be cognizant of the types of leaders you are bringing into the organization and how they fit into the long term vision of type of culture you want to have, otherwise you will end up with micro-cultures that can vary significantly depending on what team you are on. Figure out what the "Tesoro Culture" is supposed to be and make sure that everyone you are bringing in fits within those guidelines. Don't sacrifice building an enjoyable place to work just for the sake of growth and profits.
