Former Employee - Child Protective Services Investigator III in Austin, TX

I worked at Texas Department of Family and Protective Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I greatly improved my skills with conflict resolution and I was lucky to work with wonderful people. I do feel that I made a positive difference for some children. I was an investigator for CPS for 2 years and learned so much during that time that I continue to use today.

    Cons

This job is the definition of overworked and underpaid. The expectations are unrealistic and because you are dealing with the safety and lives of children, the urgency to get the job done is immense. Stress is an understatement. I do not regret my time as an investigator, but I was relieved when I left. When I talk about my experiences I tend to romanticize them, but husband has to remind me about how horrible I felt all the time, both physically and emotionally. The job is hard and not for the faint of heart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your fellow supervisors and fight for your workers. Upper management, stop turning a blind eye to what is the reality of working in the field and propose policies to help turn the department around. It really isn't about money, anyone who goes into social work knows that. It is about doing a public service you believe in and being able to do the right thing.
