I worked at The Cambridge Institute of International Education full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I met some really amazing coworkers there. You usually get to know each other really well via Cambridge's "trial by fire" method of training and development, which means that you can make some of the closest friends you've ever had during your time of suffering. The office is also close to 95 and has a good cafeteria and free covered parking.

    Cons

I'm not quite sure where to begin, so here's a top 10: 1) Cambridge promotes "harmony through education" but has staff who are divided by race and culture. Chinese staff and American staff very rarely intermingle and some have outright hostility for each other. 2) If you're not a favorite of the people at the top, don't expect advancement or promotion. If you're not interested in managing a team, don't ask about being promoted. 3) The salary inequality is extremely high. I'm only referring to people who hold the same position in this case. We've had people in the same position with a difference of $15k or more between their salaries, with the difference NOT based on experience or training. 4) There's a lot of invitation to share ideas and opinions on how the company can improve, but don't expect anything to happen from the ideas you offer. It will seem like you can fix things and make things happen, but all decisions happen at the top with no leeway and there's no literal or figurative budget for real change. There's a lot of penny-wise, pound-foolish thinking. 5) This office has extremely low security. For years, the homestay programs just had tax documents with social security numbers laying around out on desks. There is no confidentiality for students on grades or even personal issues like period cramps - anyone can view information on any student issue, host family, or school without much effort. 6) They skirt the line of legality VERY closely in many operations. Things like accommodations for disability, racism, maternity leave, and sexual harassment are not taken seriously by anyone except for one HR person who knows what they're doing, who is also appalled by everything going on. DHS has had to visit in a few cases where employment happened before the employee had a valid visa. 7) For profit education. Just sayin'. 8) Managers are never trained to manage and have no appreciable management skills, with 1-2 exceptions. Be prepared to tell your manager what is/isn't legal to deny you or ask you. The only person who was trained in management by the people at the top became the company scandal. 9) Intellectual property is not safe here. I'm referring to both appropriation from outside and not caring from within. 10) The main line given people is that a 40-hour workweek is expected, but that's not very accurate. Most jobs at Cambridge are 45-50 hours a week, minimum. Customer service reps in the US often have 60 hour a week jobs due to the time difference between the US and China. If you're not experienced in crisis management, no jobs here pay enough for the level of difficulty and lack of support you will deal with.

    Advice to Management

Stop outsourcing everything to people who know nothing about the company. Stop bringing in "consultants" who are family friends. Don't rely on advice ONLY from your favorites - make an effort to listen to people who have been at the company a long time. You rotate through favorites so quickly that you have a constantly shifting business model with no stability for anyone involved. Get to know your operations before making sweeping changes. Better yet, retire and let someone else run your business.
