I worked at The Columbus Dispatch full-time (More than 8 years)

It was once a very secure company, with a lot to offer including great benefits, great pay, and fun extras. Today it is very unstable, beginning with outsourcing in 2007, and the recent sale of the company (formerly owned by the Wolfe Family) to the New Media Investment Group. If you can get – or keep – a position at the Dispatch, it's still nice to be in the publishing industry, and their facilities are decent, with beautiful grounds at the Crosswinds location.

People are losing jobs all the time as departments pare down. In one area of circulation, for example, a certain job went from 15 employees down to 2, and these people work like dogs to handle it all on their own. Soon there will be more layoffs as the company has changed hands. One problem the Dispatch had when I was there, is that they don't keep up with changes in technology, using an operating system that took 3 times as long to create ads and print proofs. They were adamant about keeping the old methods. Their filing system in the Art Department (before outsourcing the entire dept) entailed walking around all day asking "has anyone seen this ad?" because they refused to use scanning and software to track their ads.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees that actually do the work; nobody knows better than they do about what is wrong or what is needed. Ask them for suggestions. Also, keep up with technology changes to a reasonable degree.
