I worked at The Department for Education (UK) as a contractor (More than 3 years)
Interesting work that's a really important contribution to society. Most people are really lovely to work with and most senior managers really engage with you to help make you become the best you can be - so long as you demonstrate you are enthusiastic about what you're doing.
Certain senior individuals were very condescending to junior staff. Workloads at times can be unbearable for certain individuals, whereas others seem to have it quite cushy (see below). There are numerous individuals who are clearly under-performing (and have been for some time) and not managed appropriately. This results in other's having to take up the share of their work. Rather than actually performance manage them out of the Department, these individuals just seem to get moved around and around from team to team, while others wipe their hands of responsibility.
Advice to Management
Make sure that under-performance is properly managed
