I have never worked for a company that cares so little about the work environment and the well being of its employees.

    Pros

One positive aspect to working at the Fresh market is that my coworkers and department manager are down to earth, wonderful people to work with.

    Cons

I have worked full time at the Fresh Market for a year and a half now, and my experiences have been anything but positive. I consider myself to be a responsible, dependable employee. I come to work on time. I work hard for my entire shift. I come in on my days off when extra help is needed. I do extra tasks that go beyond my job description in order to help my department. I have years and years of work experience in retail as well as other areas.

That being said, I have never worked for a company or a group of managers that care so little about the work
environment and the well being of their employees.

To begin with, the pay is incredibly low. Fresh Market uses a position pay cap system. Unless an employee is promoted, they can only make so much money an hour, regardless of how long they’ve been with the company. These pay caps are lower than those of any other grocery competitors in our area- Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Aldi, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Earthfare. To make matters worse, when I was given a (very small) raise, I was told by a manager, “Your pay is no one’s business but your own.”

Second, as of this year, Fresh Market did away with their holiday bonuses for all part time and full time employees. Instead, the company decided to institute a bonus program that was based solely on the sales performance of each store. Employees only get a bonus if the store sales were higher than the previous year. What the company fails to understand is that sales are impacted by much more than their employees’ ability to sell products. Hundreds of different factors affect products sales, such as the weather, gas prices, family vacations, personal health, the job market, etc. To base the bonuses (that underpaid employees desperately count on) on a factor that is not fully affected by employee performance is illogical and, quite frankly, insulting. Why should we be punished if it snows for a week and our sales drop due to the hazardous road conditions?

Third, ever since I’ve been with Fresh Market, departments have continuously been understaffed. Most departments in my store are forced to function without the amount of employees they need to effectively maintain their department. Turnover rates are so high (largely because of the reasons mentioned above) that the management never makes the effort to fill all the positions in each department. This forces employees to come in on their days off and to work multiple shifts in one day. By the end of the week, the store managers force the employees, who have worked incredibly hard for the overtime they’ve earned, to leave early and cut any overtime pay they collected.

Lastly, Fresh Market recently rolled out a Recipe for Success program for their employees. This program basically expresses that the company expects its employees to go above and beyond expectations if they wish to be successful while employed by Fresh Market. While this is a respectable sentiment, it translates to employees taking on more tasks than their position requires and working for other departments (in need of their own staff) without being paid for it or rewarded in any small manner. When employees voice concern about feeling overworked and underpaid, the response from management is unhelpful if not nonexistent. In fact, during the meeting in which the Recipe for Success was presented to us, employees mentioned these concerns. A manager stood up and said, “If you don’t like working here, go find another job.” Shouldn’t a company stand up for its employees and work with them to ensure they have a positive work experience?

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees. Treat them well. Don't expect your employees to go above and beyond when you won't do the same for them.
