I worked at The Fresh Market part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

It's a job. The pay is ok for retail. The store could be a good location for some associates. Many homes in the area for locals to apply. The store is very clean & the associates were very nice. They do provide an employee discount but their prices are too high for their wages.

    Cons

They don't follow through with a training technique. They cross train their associates, which is great, but a new associate needs proper training in each department one at a time. Most departments have an in depth process to assure cleanliness & proper time management. Unfortunately, they give you a quick 2 day training course during busy hours of a 2 hour process that has to be done 100% before closing then throw you to the wolves all alone. They don't have their new associates work with a one employee to have consistent training or at least ensure that the employee with uncontrolled ADHD isn't the one training you! It was so confusing & overwhelming. As well, they expect you to memorize a page of promotions on top trying to learn everything & tell you you could be written up for not knowing it.

Management was very snoody. One member of management didn't have a good rapport with most of the employees. The ones this member of management did get along with were an obvious certain type. I felt like I was being constantly judged by this member of management & felt like I was being talked down to.

After quitting I waited for my one & only check to direct deposit into my bank account. Since it was the first one I wasn't sure if everything had gone through correctly or even if they direct deposit the first check or send a paper check. Since they pay biweekly the time I started meant I had to wait 3 weeks for my first check. When that time came there was no money. I called up the store to make sure it was payday & see if they had a paper check. It was payday but they didn't have a check for me. A member of management said he'd see what was going on & to come by later that day. I knew they were able to cut checks themselves in emergency situations so I assumed that's what he was going to do. I drove the 45 minutes to get there & he wouldn't even come out but had another associate tell me he didn't have the check & they were going to send it out. I called corporate. I was quite angry! Turns on that manager just told them to send the check to the store with their next batch of checks which wouldn't come for another 2 weeks. He was going to make me wait 5 weeks to get paid. Way to get your payback. I told the payroll department that this wasn't exceptable. They did finally mail my check out.

Later I did learn that they often failed to pay their employees. They usually had to wait another 2 weeks to get their checks. If I had known that I would've never even put an application in with them. Their turn over rate is extremely high. I can see why.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're not in high school. No need to try to be the popular kid. Finding ways to get revenge on people isn't appropriate & makes the company that pays you look very bad. Follow a protocol to train your new associates properly. Don't expect them to learn it all in 2 days then make them work by themselves with no other help available to them in the store. Certain associates should never be involved in the training of new people. They may be great employees but they're not great trainers. Most of all, PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES! After all, if it weren't for their hard work you wouldn't be getting paid either!
