I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great team spirit - "can do" attitude and less finger pointing. Restricted annual stock grants for senior level employees (50% vest in 2 years, rest in 4) Most IT locations still have cubes, unfortunate open plan in one new building in Atlanta Good rewards and recognition, profit sharing can (and often does) reach 8% per annum Very strong company financially, kicking the rump of the smaller blue competitor on a regular basis Focus is where it should be, on the associates in stores who are bringing in the money

    Cons

Benefits are focused on the guys working in stores, and are substandard for professional employees: - Only match 3.5% on 401-(k), and Futurebuilder is a pretty marginal provider. - Have to wait 90 days for benefits to kick in, and a year for 401-(k) match to start. - Minimal paid holidays (6 per year) and skimpy vacation (2 weeks until 5 years, then 3 until 15). - Medical benefits are costly compared to most professional employers. Limited selections and high co-pays and deductibles even on most expensive plan. - Some of the internal IT/HR infrastructure is behind the times. - A lot of profits are not going to the store associates but to shareholders (over $10 billion this year)

    Advice to Management

Remember your value wheel and quit sending so much of the profits to stockholders. They don't contribute one cent to our bottom line or to our customer satisfaction. Store associates deserve to share more of the company's success (and Success Sharing is a joke for them compared to what back office employees get). Consider increasing starting salary like some other retailers have done. Don't buy into the open plan BS. Everyone knows the only reason you are doing it is to save money and nobody likes it.
