I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good experience if you've never worked with the public. The culture is generally positive and you learn a lot about the products you carry. The vast majority of my co-workers are decent, considerate people with a good work ethic.

    Cons

Communication is sorely lacking and you are often thrust into work for which you have never been trained. For instance, you are the lone closing associate and have to try and execute specialty sales without having been shown where to find special order SKU's or how to navigate the quotation system. One feels ignorant and inadequate and it doesn't have to be that way. If I wanted the job (and I needed one badly) I had to enter at near minimum wage even though I had decades of contracting experience to benefit customers. That seems unethical. The corporation gets to look good because I can give expert advice, yet they pay as though I have never had a job before. I suppose this will change if the housing market continues to recover. Right now it is an employers' market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the ratio of FT/PT so that there are more people on the floor who know what has been happening in a given department. Communication breakdown is the number one flaw in your operations and you should be doing anything it takes to improve it.
