I have been working at The Oakland Museum Of California part-time (more than 3 years)Pros
Meeting and interacting with visitors from all over the world is enjoyable.Cons
Very hierarchical caste system. Upper management is not interested in middle management or lower tiered workers concerns. Valuable employees are leaving in droves, like it's a sinking ship. Upper management has a definite 'emperor has no clothes' syndrome going on. They think that if they say something enough with nice, pretty words then it is true, when in fact it's the opposite.
Pay is lower than other area museums. Consistent hard work is not rewarded. Workers are casually taken for granted. There is low morale especially with 'behind the scenes' employees.
Constructive upward feedback is met with hostility.
It's a struggle to get culturally relevant exhibits and programming at this museum. It's only comfortable representing certain segments of the California population.Advice to ManagementAdvice
Guidance and training is sorely needed for management. There are good people working here but the place is very divided and there is a lack of unity. Team work is difficult in and between departments. Much work needs to be done to rehabilitate the museum.Doesn't RecommendNegative Outlook
