I have been working at The Washington Post full-time (More than 5 years)
I believe there has never been a better time to work at The Washington Post. After two years of our new ownership, our ambitions as both a news organization and as an engineering organization continue to grow at high speed. We want to be the best, and when a platform is strategically important, we want to build it ourselves and own the code. There are a lot of really smart people who work here, and they're also passionate about what we do. In my experience, the managers here are also caring and flexible: as long as your work gets done, it is possible to create a good work-life balance here.
We're a newspaper, a legacy media organization. We're also a very ambitious digital organization that is rapidly growing, but we face the same challenges that other legacy media organizations face: the old business model was disrupted by the internet, so we are hard at work growing our digital business in response. There are still a lot of old systems and databases that we need to support, because our old business hasn't gone away. It's a hard challenge. But with the resources that our ownership has provided and the talent in the organization, I believe we are by far the newspaper that is best positioned to take advantage of our existing scale and win in the digital market.
Advice to Management
Transparency is really hard: especially in a news organization, it's easy to understand why management would fear that internal communications might leak. But transparency is really important, and management has heard that from our journalists. The new management has done a pretty good job of trying to keep us more in the loop, but it will always be a push and pull.
