    I have been working at Thermo Fisher Scientific full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Very innovative and financially driven company with a focus on growth. This inside sales role is perfect for a recent college graduate with a scientific background looking to gain experience to move on to an outside sales role either within Thermo Fisher or another vendor in the space. Be careful if you do not have a scientific background as the opportunities for promotion will be very limited.

    Cons

    Pretty much everything done by management makes little to no business sense. I emailed one of my colleagues when this person left as to why they were leaving the inside sales team and they wrote: " Horrible leadership, unrealistic expectations, extremely low wages for the scientific sales industry, an ever-changing territory." This is a perfect synopsis of the issues of the role. Upper management changes policies and territories so frequently that sales reps feel as if they are working on shifting sands. There is very little commitment to personal development or growth for the Inside Sales Team. For example, about a year ago the company shifted it's Inside Sales team away from being salary employees to hourly employees without any actual explanation as to why. The change was perceived by many sales reps as a slap in the face. Growth forecasts in one's territory can difficult to understand and for certain sectors such as government and academic territories are simple unrealistic. Management constantly shifts accounts between sales representatives with little to no explanation of why which confused customers and gave them a negative perception of Thermo Fisher's committment to their account. Often times this was done to r'ealign territories, or to help remove underperforming accounts from a poorly performing representative to a better performing reps territory. Thermo Fisher did not encourage work/life balance; more flexibility such as working from home should be considered. The office environment at Thermo Fisher has deteriorated due to high turnover, poor management, and constantly changing territories and expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The first step management should do to help resolve the issues that are manifesting in its inside sales team is to hire an outside consultant to explore the way the division is run. Operational changes should be made and a greater commitment to personal and professional growth are greatly needed.
