Former Employee - Marketing Manager in Alviso, CA
Former Employee - Marketing Manager in Alviso, CA

I worked at TiVo full-time (more than 3 years)

Great Product - that's about it!

    - Senior Management has a serious lack of vision. Time for a game-changing product guys!
    - Micromanagers in the sales/marketing group.
    - No employee development during my three-year tenure - almost no one transferred to other positions internally.
    - No 401k matching.
    - Not much work/life balance
    - No telecommuting within sales/marketing group

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No focus on employee development in the Sales/Marketing Team. Once you are hired into a position, you better be happy there because there is virtually no where to go - very few promotions and almost NO latteral moves into other positions.

TiVo's top executive is a micromanager, and he needs to focus on running the company and start empowering his employees to do their jobs. He really thinks he can do everyone's job better than them - even his executive team! He needs to realize that he doesn't know how to sell better than his sales team, engineer better than his engineering team, market better than his marketing team, etc. While I was there, our marketing team came up with many great campaigns that he veto'd - instead, he came up with the forgettable "My TiVo Gets Me!" campaign.

This company needs to trust their employees more. The culture frowns on telecommuting, and has a very "old school" view of wanting employees in the office every day and work your normal 8am-5pm hours. This is an archaic perspective in Silicon Valley, and makes it very difficult for them to retain top talent.

TiVo needs better vision from top management - they have a great product which has evolved very little in the past 14 years.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
