I worked at Treacy & Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked at T&Co for about 4 years, starting as an analyst up through associate ranks. I could not have asked for a better 4 years there. Management consulting is certainly not an easy profession, it's hard work, long hours, and you are often faced with challenging clients. People who choose the career do so for the challenge, the learning and development opportunity, and of course the pay / benefits.

Within this challenging career, I believe T&Co offers a value proposition to employers that is second to none. The pay is definitely on par with the top, well-known consulting shops at each level. On top of that the work is extremely rewarding. T&Co works exclusively on solving clients' most pressing issues related to growth. To solve these problems, T&Co relies on the hard work and creativity of its employees from the top all the way down. While T&Co's IP and methodologies for solving client problems are a valuable and lasting, it is the ability of the firm to adapt and evolve it's methodologies for unique client problems that gets the job done. As an employee, you will have the opportunity to actually solve real world problems, think creatively, and see through that solutions get implemented. Everyone from analysts to associates, managers, and partners are actively involved in this work.

While T&Co is a smaller firm, the clients it serves are large and well-known. This is your average boutique firm. Especially for younger ranks, it offers a unique opportunity to play active roles early on with high-level clients at very well known firms with well publicized growth challenges. You will not be stuck in a cubicle performing analyses while your manager schmoozes with clients.

The collegial culture is great and made leaving the firm tremendously difficult. Weekly firmwide lunches are served allowing people to take a breather and catch up on activities and other engagements around the firm. Michael Treacy and the two partners, Rob & Alan, play an very active role in day-to-day activities - it's incredible to learn from their experiences. You will build lasting relationships here, professionally and socially. Perhaps the greatest testament to that is when I made the tough decision to leave for other personal and professional ambitions, I received nothing but support and encouragement from the top down.

    Cons

T&Co is a smaller firm and as a result requires much more out of all of it's employees. They have invested heavily over the last years in training and development for employees which is certainly paying off for everyone. That said, if you want a job where you spend your first 2 months in a classroom and are given the answers for how to do you job every step of the way, don't work here. You will be expected to learn while doing. It can be stressful and you will be pushed beyond your comfort zone, which can require late nights and hard work if you want to succeed. That said, if you want to learn and push yourself, these aspects are probably a positive.

Travel is frequent but probably less frequent than other firms. It's not a mandatory 4-day travel week. If you don't like travel, especially the type of travel that pops up with 1-2 days warning, also probably not a great job, but if that is the case you probably shouldn't be a consultant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to invest in training and development for employees - it's paying off big for individual employees and for project teams and client output

Find ways to maintain collegial feel of small firm as you grow
