Current Employee - Lawn Specialist in Gaithersburg, MD

I have been working at TruGreen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of overtine available to those who work for it. Working alone without constant supervision once you have earned it. The ability to solve customer complaints on your own without needing any type of approval.

    Cons

The seasonal layoff! No one above the branch manager has a clue how this business actually works. Regional management wants to apply methods of work for an entirely different business to a landscape business. They are constantly trying to find new ways to increase productivity with counter productive measures. The new system of routing is by far the most innefficient and costly thing they have ever done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The layoffs have greatly lowered the quality of our specialists. The time we are laid off used to be used for training and overhauling of our equipment. We work long and hard all year especially in the spring and fall. We make more than enough throughout the year to not be thrown out as soon as production ceases. This has changed the attitudes of EVERY employee towards the company. When we were asked in the past to do above and beyond,we did it without a gripe because we felt like we were part of a family. Now we all feel like we should just do the bare minimum since we will be laid off anyway. Unemployment doesn't even cover the cost of food after benefits and taxes. So you come back to work in debt after working in 100 degree heat and 35 degree cold. It really makes you feel like you are of no worth to the company. This also sends us out in the spring with equipment and trucks that are faulty. This is another hinderance to productivity. Look at you P&L's before and after you a started layoffs and took routing out of individual branches.
