    I worked at U.S. Bank full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    The company has longevity for many employees who stay there for years. It is financially very well managed. It was the only large bank that made profits throughout the recent downturn. As a bank it plays safe, but continues to return sound if not spectacular results

    Cons

    Beyond a certain level up, your progress is tied to managing up only. Some managers simply do not care about their subordinates if it suits them, they will ignore and let some languish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay attention to how your senior level executives treat their subordinates. Perhaps you know it and think it works well for the company. The practice of "managing up" is rife in some departments. If you want talent to contribute at a higher level, manage the politics so that it truly serves the company and all of the people who are willing to do a great job. (2) Separately, your customer service as a bank is slipping very much. Many customer service people do not do a great job, the culture is simply not there to make sure that they (a) know what they are doing, (b) solve problems for their customers (3) make it easy to do business with the bank. Sometimes the decline is so slow that you may not notice until it becomes a strategic concern and huge problem.
