Former Employee - Senior Technical Staff  in  La Jolla, CA
Former Employee - Senior Technical Staff in La Jolla, CA

I worked at UC San Diego full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Often (depending on job) flexible hours or telecommuting is possible, and not insane hours either
    - Lots of different projects (many are Very Cool) and activities going on
    - Reasonable possibilities to move from one position to the next
    - IT support can be state of the art (or, not...)
    - Great pension if you make it 5 years
    - Nice after-hours pick-up games (soccer!) and activities
    - Oh, the weather! Wow.

    Cons

    - Pay scale on the low side (very low compared to Silicon Valley, but not too bad for San Diego)
    - You will have trouble getting ANY raises after you start, let alone reasonable ones
    - Parking is expensive and not very convenient to some places (read: Atkinson Hall)
    - Your mileage will vary according to your boss and your project; environment great or terrible accordingly
    - The bureaucracy is moderately inept (occasionally brutally inept), so HR, IT, facilities support goes accordingly
    - Poor bicycle access and accommodation (no showers in reasonably new buildings? seriously?)
    - Hiring process is messy, no matter which side you look at it from
    - They don't do well on the "abusive environment" questionnaire; it isn't inherently abusive, it's just unmonitored.
    - Mentoring is not a university thing. Get over it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - If there's a vision for employees to share, I didn't see it.
    - If there's a serious desire to make the place better to work for employees, I didn't see it.

Your employees are your face to EVERYONE. You probably need to pay more attention to this area.
