I have been working at UNM Health Sciences Center full-time (more than 10 years)

Can't beat the college environment the learning and the variety of work assignments. As faculty I have quite a bit of flexibility in my schedule. I can champion projects that interest me and skip those that don't. The benefits package is extremely generous.

Very difficult to establish a career ladder without an MD or PhD degree, this is a very MD centric environment akin to a club. If you are not in the club, you have no career ladder. The lack of career ladder leaves even senior employees feeling as if they are not valued. This in turn leads to employees seeking other opportunities. Finally, faculty salaries for those not on. The senior leadership/executive leadership club, are set at 25% percentile of industry standards. I have been with UNM for 12 years. Today is my last lecture....I am sad to be leaving and wish UNM was more invested in me. If I hadv12 years at another employer, I feel I would have significantly greater possibilities for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mentor junior faculty to senior faculty status. Once senior status offer advancement opportunities to RETAIN you experienced, qualified faculty.
